Breaking Down Kapi Dance - Music Production Masterclass

By Mahesh Raghvan

In this masterclass, I would be breaking down one of my favourite originals - The Kapi Dance, which was done in collaboration with the popular Hindustani Violinst Nandini Shankar. This session is for upcoming music producers who want more of an insight into my workflow while creating Indian fusion music.

What will be covered

  • An in depth discussion of the composition, structure, ideas and production behind the original track 'The Kapi Dance'
  • A look into the Logic Pro Session, a breakdown of the chord structures, tracks and layers
  • The journey of the song from scratch to final master.

Who is this for?

  • Upcoming Music Producers
  • Musicians who want insights on professional music production
  • A listener who wants to know what goes on behind the scenes of a song.

I would be using Logic Pro to showcase the song for the purpose of this masterclass but the concepts can be executed across any DAW (Garageband, Ableton, Protools, Cubase, FL Studio, etc).

Any knowledge of Western/Indian Classical music theory and/or basic music production skills would benefit your understanding.

About the Artist

Mahesh Raghvan

Mahesh Raghvan is an Indian musician who is known for his Carnatic fusion music. His experiments with Carnatic music on the iPad have multi-million views on social media. Besides being a full time musician and music producer for two bands 'Carnatic 2.0' and 'Thayir Sadam Project', Mahesh does music technology workshops across major universities and is the creative director of IndianRaga. Mahesh was a pioneer in bringing music on Touch OS to Indian mainstream music. One of the most popular apps in that space is GeoShred. He came up with innovative ways to produce the Indian note bends (also referred to as Gamaks and Meends) on the iPad surface. He was spotted by none other than the legendary Jordan Rudess, the father of GeoShred, and together with Mahesh' input, the platform was advanced to reproduce expressions and inflections that are typical to Indian music on an iOS device. This innovation has created a whole new generation of musicians around the world who have taken and created incredible music with iPad. Mahesh still remains the biggest champion of GeoShred and a force to reckon with, playing Indian classical, or semi-classical on iPad with incredible expressions. On LivDemy, Mahesh conducts a lot of live sessions on GeoShred, music production. There's also a complete course hosted by him, How to play music on iPad.
