Course Description

Ever wanted to play music on your iPad? This course will help you get started with the app GeoShred and will cover a few basic exercises, scales and songs. I will also be talking about getting started with the Carnatic sliding techniques (gamakas) that I have been using in this course.

Background

I have been working with the GeoShred app for the last 4 years, and have been using it to play Indian music. I have been working with moForte, the developers of GeoShred to incorporate Indian Music techniques on the app.

Who this course is for?

  • Musicians who want to get started with playing the GeoShred app
  • Music lovers who want to explore playing music on the iPad
  • Music Producers who want to get started with using GeoShred

What will be taught in this course

  • App overview
  • Techniques to play scales
  • Note pattern exercises
  • Fingering techniques
  • Simple songs and melodies
  • Getting started with playing slides (gamakas)

Prerequisites / Requirements

  • iPad with GeoShred Pro/Play app
  • Basic knowledge of Music

iPad specs

The detailed specs of the iPad for playing GeoShred is here. Besides, the following note given by our partner, MoForte.com, the makers of GeoShred app.

The exact iPad and configuration is really a personal choice. We recommend that you can get the most powerful iPad that you can afford. Here are some additional parameters.

  • Older devices work, depending on which version of iOS is running on the device.
  • The GeoSWAM instruments require at least iOS 11.4. Also at least iOS 11.4 is require to use the AUv3 plugin mechanism because this is the minimum version of IOS where this feature appears. That being said, we really recommend that you run the latest version of iOS which is currently 15.5. There have been many bugs in iOS with MIDI, Audio, AUv3 that Apple has fixed over the last few releases. Note that the GeoSWAM Instruments are In-App-Purchaes (IAPs). GeoShred comes with the plucked string models including the feedback distortion guitar, dobro, sitar, classical ...
  • There are several different screen sizes for iOS devices. Which size you chose is really dependent on how it feels for your hands, a personal choice.
  • On iOS devices that support 3D touch (phones with 3D touch) You get Velocity/Pressure directly from the screen, but the screen is small. Lots of users do fine with that. See our "Collection I&II" video
  • For iPads and phones that don't support 3D touch, we use what is called "KeyY Touch" for Velocity. The Velocity comes from the height of were the key is tapped, and pressure is mapped to KeyY sliding on the key.
  • The choice of how much space to get is dependent on how many apps you plan to store on your device. I personally have 64GB.

Additional note from Mahesh Raghvan: Any currently available iPad will do if it's only for GeoShred.

- iPad 9th Gen (onwards)

- iPad 10th Gen

- iPad Air 4,

- iPad Air 5,

- iPad Pro 11"

- iPad Pro 12"

Avoid iPad mini for its screen size being too small. If anybody has iPad mini, they can start learning with it. But eventually they can plan on purchasing a bigger one later for the ease.
